Phil met with football players in the weight room today at PV and told them, NO, he was not going to Abingdon. He said he owes it to all his players and fans to stay at PV.

Folks, I am telling you that coaching supplements are not counted toward retirement. This is not a County option, it comes from the State. It has been presented many times in the General Assembly, but has never been passed. As I stated before, if my bus driving salary counted toward my retirement, then I would be sitting high.

If I remember correctly the coaches association tried a couple of years ago to get the state to count it. It counts towards your gross earnings at tax time but in VA it doesn't go towards your retirement total. That is all counties in VA, because the STATE doesn't allow it.

I believe you on the supplement issue teach but with the way the job is listed

Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License; teaching assignment will depend on needs of the school. Must work effectively with others and be an effective instructional leader. Must have successful experience in coaching football and be able to implement a high quality athletic program and an off-season conditioning program. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: For the 2007-2008 school year. Salary starting at $32,170 (2006-2007 scale) plus coaching supplement of $4,070, with $40 added for each year of coaching experience. DEADLINE: February 16, 2007. "

The supplement for coaching is $4070, that wouldnt be counted, but the other $32170 would. If someone was hired as both, its some $68k not with the supplement of 4070 and 3190 (not adjusted for years). If they hired a person to coach, maybe gave them a study hall or something (no actual teaching) then the VRS figures would be based off that $68k. If Phil had took it, he would have pulled in a lot more (with the supplements) bu this VRS values would have reflected off of the 68k which would still be higher than I would think he was getting now.

And as for the one who said its a rumor. A rumor that he was gone, yes, but the whole thing wasn't a rumor.

This is really simple. Robbins will be at Powell Valley next year, not Abingdon. It was stated on this forum that he was leaving Powell Valley and taking the AD, football, and track job at Abingdon. That's a rumor and there was more than ONE poster on this board that knew it wasn't happening.

Rock I may be reading your post wrong but I think you may have it confused. No one would be paid 68000. The person would be hired either as a teacher and start out at 32170 (or wherever they are experience wise on the salary scale) and get the 4070 football bonus or they would be hired as AD (35817 and 3190)and possibly coach (4070). They aren't going to receive money as AD, a teacher, and football coach. The AD is a separate position at Abingdon- there are no teaching duties involved.

And also Washington County (and i think Wise County as well for the most part) has done away with study halls.

I very well may be reading it wrong, was under the impression though that the offer was pretty high. I definitely won't say that I have much idea about the whole thing, just trying to piece the data and possible ideas together. I would guess if that was the case, the 35000k wouldn't be too much difference than he's getting now.

Teachers top out alot higher than that in Wise County. He has a total of about 35 years in..including c-burg and john battle. That would be a signifigant cut..but i'm sure he'd get his steps etc. He prolly would have made more there than here...a considerable amount more.
